Maybe I was a bit carried away with use of the word awesome ... but once again (Ireland 22-10 on 9/11) we fell within 3 scores of toppling a 6 nations country - 2 converted tries and we would have beat Ireland. I'm not quite so niave to think that if we had narrowed the gap we wouldn't have found a harder Irish or Italian front ... and remember I was the first to report the Irish teams pre-match late night party in New Plymouth ... but there was some real signs of we can take the ball in hand and be effective in attack. Not the usual USA pride in just we tackle hard. If Eddie would have gotten Petri out of there earlier or somehow gotten the message to him "Don't even thinlk about putting your foot to the ball!!" and replaced lethargic A. Suniulo (sp problem I think) we could have kept the score closer with Italy. Yes, the scrum was a disaster. But the whole scrum situation is chaos. They will go the way of league soon with uncontested scrums as the refs don't have a clue.

Well, Mr. Journo, you are as optimistic and conservative as ever.
To say that the USA was awesome in its RWC display is madness because all could have, should have been better. Take note of what Mallett said about our loosehead and see if it is a compliment or an important observation. all over the field but his job is in the trenches which he didn't do...getting around the pitch is a bonus but as coaches aren't looking for bonuses, a prop's job is the grafting hard work of the set pieces and when you are going backward like an Ita;lian tank with three gears in reverse that ought to tell somebody something. Until the scrum starts to front up with other countries, at least hold its own, awesome is not a word I would ever use, awful yes.
Is this talk traitorous? No, honest.
Having said all that, it is time to rid the USA of all its preposterous 'let me play like a foreigner' aspirations, all it's glorious umbilical ties top Ireland, and rid itself of Melville and O'Sullivan: yokes , financial drains, RFU and IRB overlords like all the other implants in Romania, Georgia, Russia,Japan,Tonga,Samoa,Fiji and Canada. The only guppy team that doesn't have an RFU/IRB puppet is Namibia ands that is because of its South African ties and the fact that it has a population of 2 million and in Windhoek the language is Afrkaans.
You want a winner. The best way is to start over and start developing some original ideas based on the real strength in this sort of sport that Americans do possess and , to begin with, get rid of all the gym monkeys.......technique may be one reason for a scrum moving backward at knots but natural strngth, not artificial gym strength, is the first step forward....like in advance...not in retreat , which is where USA rugby has gone since 1924.

Hello from my bed.
The first week put me here because I haven't watched a live game since I think Georgia/England, five minutes of Samoa/Fiji and, of course, the enthralling USA/Australia match.
I don't even bother with the highlights.
The reason is fore my ennui is the hype of any sleeping giants has realistically been readjusted to dwarf tossing. The sleeping giant doesn't want to be disturbed.
The usual suspects return less most probably Scotland and cerainly Fiji.
The USA once again must return home and reinventing their rugby for the umpteenth time in over 100 years. Trying for the gold has turned into I found a lucky penny.
I understand that the USA did manage to send a brigade of supporters who cheered the USA onward and upward even though the team was losing altitude after a plucky win against the Russians, two near hits, and one massacre.
Nothing to write home about but this time around I really think nobody left gutted except maybe some of the players.
For me, the cynical bastard that I am, I simply end with one of my well worn cliches, same shit, different day.

Yea. you are right with your usuual suspects theory. I was shocked how easily SA dismantle Namibia and Italy Russia. I am hoping for a tight score against Australia just for some sort of minnow frontup but it looks bleak for all the minnows. I need Oz to beat the USA by fifty to stay in my fortune arena(it is the reverse pointwise of what I had origianlly spoke about, meaning that Ireland winning bug over USA and USA playing tough against Wallabys. Russia was such a letdown result in the Italy match. But I have never seen Italy play so well. This does not bode well for the Eagles.
France should just curtsy to the All Blacks because they can't come close to winning.
The biggest surprise thus far is SA. While the competition has been weak(Fiji and Namibia and Wales) they look to be putting it together rather nicely. The Steyn boys have certainly made a statement.
Having thought it out, the only real possibility of Samoa beating South Africa is unreal but still I will hope against hope that , at least, Samoa asks some questions of the Boks that Wales did.
It will now be a surprise if Scotland beats Argentina but if that happens, wouldn't it be nice to see Scotland beat England and see how the pool develops?
Enjoy the Land of ther Long White Cloud and hold on to the hope that some minnows evade the great white one.

Great early call on Ireland v Australia. Hopefully you made your fortune on that bet.
Springbok v All Black final is not going to happen now. If the Boks don't stumble in the pool against Samoa or quarterfinals vs Wallabies they have a date with All Black destiny in semis. Irish v All Black final is a real possibility. Use your winnings from Ireland v Australia to get yourself a ticket to Auckland for that one. You can probably sweet talk Carolyn out of her ticket to the match.
Lisatening to radio today as we cruised thorugh Hawkes Bay vineyards it sounded like the French are putting out B side vs All Blacks, so they are hoping to get through quarters (v England) and semis (ireland or Wales) to rain on the ABs parade.

The team that I have been least impressed with up until this time is England but that means absolutely nothing. They may still be sorting things out but England still remain the country with the deepest pool of players worldwide and the most vicious of a domestic league.
It is fair to call them thuggish but no morseso that to call the Aussies or Kiwis cheats.
Still they are the tyeam top be feared.
I don't worry too much about the turnaround time at the RWC. When we played we often played two , sometimes three matches in a day. These are professionals.
I have no real sympathy in that department.
Having said all this, I cannot see Samoa beating SA nor losing to Fiji. It is possible.
The NZ/France pool match should run in that order despite France's hoodoo.
One difficult pool remains and that only involves Argentina and Scotland. On past record I'd have to go Scotland despite being coached by Andy Robinson, who has limited appeal to me, as do most of the coaches.
Okay.
This leaves me with two interesting matches which would not affect positioning unless Argentina should smash Scotland, which I cannot see, especially without Contemponi.
I can see Scotland beating England and a famous win ,while not historic, would be good for the RWC in terms of something unusual. Right now the minnow sides are simply just a slightly larger species.
What side would be the most tasty? Right now, probably honorary wooden spooners Italy. Having been coached out of rugby by Kirwan ( all of his Italian Kiwis) and Mallett( his SA and Argentine, Kiwi, and Oz Italians), I'd have to hope that Russia or the USA might target Italy.
Russia played about twenty minutes of good , not brilliant rugby, against the Americans but showed that some hope for massive improvement considering they have few inuuries, unlike the Georgians who were littering the pitch during the England match, and rugby needs somebody to step up.
I am hoping the Americans play Australia tight for reasons of my own but < from past performance, I think the Italians will front the Americans up in the scrum, and deny the USA backs any quality ball except from their lineout BUT beware the South African locks in that department, especially Van Zyl.
So my upset opf the tournament is not Ireland over Australia, nor Scotland over England, nor a repeat France over NZ because it won't happen, but Russia, maybe the USA over Itay.
I am hoping that Ireland can get some confidence pout ofd their win and carry on.
But it looks to be the same guys, either France or England or South Africa against New Zealnd, the eventual winners, and , in my dreams, an Ireland?NZ final with the same result.
